Life Journey
A timeline of disciplines, transitions, and growth — from martial arts to software engineering.
Early Martial Arts Training
Began training in traditional Chinese martial arts at a young age. Developed foundational discipline through rigorous practice of Cotton Belly (棉花肚) — a specialized breathing and conditioning technique for core resilience, Vajra Palm (大力金刚掌) — a striking method emphasizing structural alignment and power generation, and Echo Location (听声辩位) — an auditory awareness exercise for spatial perception. These early practices instilled a deep respect for structured learning, body mechanics, and mental focus.
Culinary Arts & Family Restaurant
Learned professional cooking techniques and kitchen management while contributing to the family restaurant business. Developed a reward-and-penalty system that improved operational efficiency and staff accountability. This experience taught me systems thinking, process optimization, and the importance of clear incentive structures — principles that later translated directly into software engineering workflows.
Short & Medium-Haul Freight
Operated short and medium-haul freight routes, managing logistics coordination, route planning, and time-sensitive deliveries. This hands-on experience in real-world logistics provided a grounded understanding of supply chain dynamics, resource allocation under constraints, and the value of precise execution — all of which inform my approach to building reliable, efficient systems.
The Path of Learning
Embarked on a dedicated academic journey, navigating the rigorous Chinese postgraduate entrance examination system. This period was a masterclass in self-directed learning, time management, and sustained intellectual effort — balancing deep technical study with the discipline cultivated from years of martial arts training.
Major Transition
Made a deliberate pivot into computer science, transitioning from a non-CS background. This required rapidly building foundational knowledge in data structures, algorithms, and software design — often teaching myself from first principles. The transition was fueled by the same systematic approach learned in martial arts: break down complex skills into manageable components, practice deliberately, and iterate relentlessly.
Software Engineer at Amazon
Joined Amazon as a Software Engineer, working on large-scale distributed systems. This chapter represents the convergence of all prior experiences — the discipline from martial arts, the systems thinking from restaurant management, the logistics mindset from freight, and the structured learning from academic pursuits.
